Inside the Arboretum: June 2026

When many people hear the word arboretum, they picture a beautiful garden filled with flowers, trees, and walking paths. While beauty is certainly part of the experience, an arboretum is much more than a pleasant place to spend an afternoon. It is a living museum dedicated to the collection, study, conservation, and appreciation of trees and other woody plants.

That is why we are excited to share that the Longview Arboretum & Nature Center has recently achieved Level I Accreditation through ArbNet, the only global accreditation program for arboreta.

This recognition marks an important milestone in our organization’s growth and reflects years of work by volunteers, staff, board members, Master Gardeners, and community supporters who have helped cultivate and care for this special place.

So what exactly does accreditation mean?

Just as museums, zoos, and educational institutions often pursue accreditation to demonstrate professional standards, arboreta can earn accreditation by meeting specific criteria related to plant collections, public access, education, and long-term stewardship. ArbNet accreditation signifies that an arboretum has established a documented collection of trees and woody plants, maintains records of those collections, and is committed to preserving and sharing them for future generations.

For visitors, accreditation may not immediately change what they see when they walk through our gates. You will still find beautiful gardens, peaceful walking paths, seasonal displays, and opportunities to connect with nature. What accreditation does provide is assurance that the Longview Arboretum is actively working to grow and manage its collections according to recognized professional standards.

As a Level I Accredited Arboretum, we now join a global network of arboreta and botanical institutions dedicated to conservation, education, and the promotion of healthy urban and natural landscapes. This recognition strengthens our ability to serve as a community resource while laying the groundwork for future growth.

The accreditation also aligns closely with our mission. Since its founding, the Longview Arboretum & Nature Center has sought to inspire an appreciation for nature through education, conservation, and community engagement. Whether hosting Summer Science Camps, free Lunch & Learn programs, community tree giveaways, school field trips, or seasonal events, we strive to connect people with the natural world in meaningful ways.

Trees play an important role in our daily lives, often in ways we do not even realize. They provide shade, improve air quality, support wildlife, reduce stress, and enhance the beauty of our neighborhoods. By maintaining a diverse collection of trees and woody plants, the Arboretum serves as both an educational resource and a living laboratory where visitors can learn about species that thrive in East Texas and discover the value of preserving our natural heritage.

Achieving accreditation is not the end of a journey, it is the beginning of a new chapter. As we continue developing our Master Garden Plan, expanding plant collections, improving educational opportunities, and enhancing visitor experiences, accreditation provides a strong foundation upon which to build.

Most importantly, this accomplishment belongs to the entire community. Every member, donor, volunteer, visitor, and supporter has played a role in helping the Arboretum reach this milestone. Together, we are creating a place where people of all ages can learn, explore, and find inspiration in nature.

The next time you visit the Longview Arboretum & Nature Center, we hope you will take a moment to look beyond the beauty of the gardens and recognize something even more meaningful: a living collection that is being preserved, studied, and shared for the benefit of our community and future generations.

We invite you to come experience this growing resource for yourself. After all, the Longview Arboretum is more than a garden—it is a living museum, and it belongs to all of us.
