New Additions and Holiday Magic at the Longview Arboretum
Visitors arriving at the Longview Arboretum and Nature Center may notice something new as they turn off Cotton Street and into the parking lot. The Arboretum has completed the installation of beautiful, raised beds framed by Crepe Myrtle and Chinese Pistache trees, creating a colorful and inviting first impression for guests. The project was funded through a generous grant from the CHRISTUS Community Impact Fund, with planting support provided by the Gregg County Master Gardeners.
The new beds mark an important step in expanding both the educational mission and public visibility of the Arboretum. Even six years after opening, many residents in the Longview area are still unfamiliar with what an arboretum is and why it is a valuable asset to the community. Our hope is that these trial gardens will serve as a welcoming introduction for those driving by or visiting for the first time. These gardens will become our “calling card,” and spark curiosity in people who may not have visited us yet. They are also a visible way to show what grows well in East Texas.
Colorful plantings are not just decorative. Studies have shown that even brief encounters with natural beauty can reduce stress and improve mental well-being. The Arboretum hopes the new beds provide a moment of calm and brightness in the day of anyone traveling Cotton Street, while also encouraging more residents to stop in and explore the grounds.
The trial garden will serve an important horticultural purpose behind the scenes. Garden staff will use the new beds to test and propagate a wide variety of plants, evaluating how they adapt to the region’s soil, rainfall, and climate. Staff will document how each species performs—height, bloom time, fragrance, color intensity—and use that information to guide future plantings throughout the Arboretum. Volunteers, gardening clubs, and guests will also be able to learn from the results, especially those interested in finding plants that thrive in local home landscapes.
While the new gardens greet visitors during the day, the Arboretum is preparing to captivate guests in an entirely different way at night. This season marks the debut of Bright! A Season of Lights, a new walk-through Christmas light experience that organizers believe will quickly become a favorite East Texas holiday tradition.
Beginning November 28, every Thursday, Friday and Saturday night through January 3rd the Arboretum’s gardens will be transformed into a glowing trail of lights, color, and festive scenes. Visitors can expect illuminated tunnels, shimmering displays, and color-washed trees highlighting the natural beauty of the landscape. The event is designed to offer a family-friendly, outdoor holiday experience where guests can slow down, take in the scenery, and make memories together.
In addition to the lights, Bright! will feature visits with Santa, themed Meet-and-Greet nights with princess characters, and local food trucks offering seasonal favorites. Hot chocolate, s’mores, and other treats will help set the festive mood.
Throughout the season, the Arboretum will also host performances by local choirs, musicians, and artists, giving visitors even more reason to return on multiple nights. Children will enjoy hands-on activities such as holiday crafts, face painting, and letter-writing to Santa.
Bright! has something for everyone—families, couples, grandparents, and groups of friends. It’s an opportunity to celebrate the holidays, enjoy being outdoors, and see the Arboretum in a completely new way. With the addition of the trial gardens at the entrance and the launch of Bright! A Season of Lights, the Longview Arboretum is entering a new chapter of growth, visibility, and community engagement. We hope residents will stop by during the day to enjoy the new plantings and return in the evening to experience the magic of the holiday season.
