Cultivating Curiosity: How the Arboretum is Inspiring the Next Generation Through Nature
In a world increasingly shaped by screens and schedules, opportunities for children to explore, discover, and simply be outside are more important than ever. At the Longview Arboretum and Nature Center, we believe some of life’s most meaningful learning happens not at a desk, but under the open sky, where a lifelong connection to nature begins.
Outdoor experiences play a critical role in childhood development. Studies continue to show that time spent in nature can improve focus, reduce stress, boost creativity, and support both physical and emotional well-being. For children, the benefits are even more profound. When kids are given the space to explore the natural world, they aren’t just learning about plants, insects, or ecosystems, they’re developing problem-solving skills, building independence, and discovering a sense of wonder that stays with them long after the day ends.
At the Arboretum, creating these opportunities is at the heart of what we do. As a living outdoor museum, our gardens are designed not only to be beautiful, but to be engaging, interactive, and inspiring for guests of all ages. For our youngest visitors, that mission comes to life most vividly through our Summer Science Camps.
This summer, we are excited to once again offer two week-long camp sessions designed for children ages 6–12. Each day of camp brings a new theme and a new opportunity for hands-on discovery. From themes like Bird Day to Butterfly Day to Mushroom Day, campers will explore the fascinating diversity of the natural world through guided activities, creative projects, and outdoor adventures.
Led by experienced educators, our camps combine science, play, and exploration in a way that feels both fun and meaningful. Children might spend the morning observing pollinators in the garden, and then creating nature-inspired crafts, all the while, laughing and learning alongside new friends. Special guests and interactive experiences add even more excitement, while the natural setting of the Arboretum provides the perfect backdrop for discovery.
In addition to our outdoor experiences, the Nature Center provides engaging indoor spaces where children can continue to explore and learn. Two separate land and water themed classrooms offer hands-on opportunities for discovery in a comfortable, welcoming environment and extend the Arboretum’s educational mission beyond the garden paths. These spaces are also available for rent as a unique and meaningful setting for children’s birthday parties and celebrations.
Beyond the activities themselves, what makes these experiences truly special is the environment. The Arboretum offers a safe, welcoming space where children are encouraged to slow down, ask questions, and engage with the world around them. It’s a place where curiosity is celebrated and where learning feels like an adventure.
These experiences matter, not just for the children who attend, but for our community as a whole. By fostering a connection to nature at an early age, we are helping to cultivate future stewards of the environment. We are also providing families with meaningful opportunities to get outside together, to unplug, and to reconnect with what matters most.
As we continue to grow, we remain committed to expanding access to these kinds of experiences. From educational programs like our Lunch and Learn series to future plans for enhanced children’s spaces, we are always looking for new ways to invite our community to engage, explore, and learn.
This summer, we invite families to join us at the Longview Arboretum and Nature Center. Whether it’s through our Summer Science Camps, a birthday celebration, or a simple afternoon walk through the gardens, there is something here for everyone to discover.
Because when children are given the chance to get outside, to explore, and to imagine, they don’t just grow, they thrive. And here at the Arboretum, we are growing right alongside them.
